Infinite Reflections
Beneath the silk canvas of Pan Xi’s work, beneath the endlessly deriving phantoms of tempting human figures, there is not just a single source, the female of Narcissus, self –narrating, or self-infatuated — each illusion capture a specific moment in a specific circumstance and in an emotional appeal. Each is a profile of a soul. On the translucent delicate silk, the gracefully presented images are not representations of specific beings, but fragments of the reflection of the artist herself.
….
There is no script, no plot --but only snapshots; no role, no setting, but only immediate moments in time. Sensitive outlines express delicate trembling and vibration, even distortion, triggering a sense of vertigo. Installed in sealed clear cubes, the diluted colors are so thin that they appear like an unconscious shadow of a momentary life. For the need of both form and ritual, the images repeat detachment and attachment, separation and composition. The bubble-like patterns throughout the canvas burst and overflow in an endless advance and retreat. The gestures are unveiled, yet the answers of the riddles are kept in mystery.
Pan Xi’s works are transcripts of mirror images, reflections of reflections, illusions of illusions. They are persistently detailed, yet natural and impulsive, delightful but restless, both introverted and amorous. They are the two sides of a mirror with infinite reflections of each other. On one side, a mirage in the sky; on the other, the reality of existence.
